In 1995 the shootings for the first season of Cobra 11 started. The first season consists of a pilot and eight episodes. This season was produced by the production-company Polyphon. The action-scenes were made by Action Concept. On the 12th of March 1996 the pilot was broadcasted by the German tv-station RTL Television. The other episodes of the first season were broadcasted after the pilot. The number of viewers of this first season were sensational high: the pilot had approx. 10 million viewers and the episodes had an average of 7,2 million viewers.
Because of this great succes RTL ordered 22 new episodes from Polyphon. In the autumn of 1996 the shootings for this second season started. A year later in the autumn of 1997 these shootings were finished. These 22 episodes are broadcasted spread over three sub-seasons. The first six episodes were broadcasted in the spring of 1997 by RTL Television. In the autumn of that year again six episodes were broadcasted on German television. The last 10 episodes were broadcasted in the spring of 1998 by the German RTL.
The number of viewers were still good and RTL Television ordered 16 new episodes. This third season was in contradistinction to the first two seasons not produced by Polyphon, but by Action Concept. Action Concept was in the first four seasons already responsible for the action-scenes of Cobra 11. Because Action Concept now took care of the production of all scenes, the locations of the shootings of Cobra 11 changed also. Season one and two were filmed near Berlin and Brandenburg. From the third season the episodes are recorderd in Nord-Rhein Westfalen. This area lies in the west of Germany near Cologne and Düsseldorf. There the shootings for the 16 new episodes started in febraury 1998 and these shootings were finished in february 1999. In the first few weeks of 1999 two episodes were filmed at the vacation-island Mallorca to avoid the cold weatherconditions in Germany. The death of André was also filmed at Mallorca. The 16 episodes were broadcasted in two sub-seasons. Eight episodes were broadcasted in the autumn of 1998 and the other eight episodes in the spring of 1999. In the last episode of the sixth season André dies tragically.
Due to the continual high number of viewers RTL Television ordered new episodes. The shootings for the fourth season took place from the spring of 1999 until the winter of 2000. Also this time Action Concept was responsible for the production. There were 15 new episodes made which are preceded by a tv-movie. In the movie René Steinke makes his first appearance as Tom Kranich. The movie was broadcasted in Germany on the 16th of december 1999. Next ten episodes were broadcasted in the first three months of 2000. The other five episodes were broadcasted in november and december of 2000 by RTL Television.7

In the spring of 2000 the shootings for 16 new episodes have begun. Also these episodes will be preceded by a tv-movie (together the fifth season). This movie and five episodes were broadcasted in the spring of 2001 by the German television. Six episode of this fifth season were broadcasted for the first time on German tv in november/december 2001. The other five episodes were broadcasted in March and April of 2002 on German television.
In March 2002 the last shootings for the sixth season of Cobra 11 took place. This season again consists of a tv-movie and 16 episodes. The first three episodes of this season were broadcasted in the spring of 2002 on the German RTL. The tv-movie and eight episodes were broadcasted in the autumn of 2002. The remaining five episodes have been broadcasted on German tv in the spring of 2003. In the last episode of this season René Steinke leaves Cobra 11.
In April 2002 the shootings for the seventh season have started. This season consists of a tv-movie and 12 epsiodes. In the tv-movie actor Christian Oliver makes his first appearance as the Cobra 11 detective Jan Richter. The tv-movie “Feuertaufe” and eight episodes (among which the 100th episode) were broadcasted on German television in the autumn of 2003. The remaining four episodes of the seventh season will be broadcasted in Germany in the spring of 2004.

In February 2004 the shootings for the eighth season of Cobra 11 were ended. This season also starts with a tv-movie. In “Für immer und ewig” Semir and Andrea will marry eachother. Beside this tv-movie the eighth season consists of 14 episodes. Five episodes were broadcasted on German television in the spring of 2004. The tv-movie and the remaining 9 episodes were aired in the autumn of 2004 on the German RTL. The last episode of this season is also the last episode in which Christian Oliver plays in Cobra 11.
In March of 2004 the shootings for the 9th season started which begins with the return of René Steinke. In the spring of 2005 eight of the in total 18 episodes were broadcasted on German television. Five episodes were broadcasted in the autumn of 2005 on RTL Television. The remaining 5 episodes will be broadcasted in the spring of 2006. Currently the shootings for the 10th season take place. RTL Television has already given Action Concept the order to produce an 11th season of Cobra 11. The shootings for this season will start in the spring of 2006.

As said “Alarm für Cobra 11″ is broadcasted in Germany by RTL Television. But also outside Germany you can see “Alarm für Cobra 11″. For example, in Austria ORF started in july 1996 broadcasting Cobra 11, in february 1998 RTL 7 started broadcasting Cobra 11 in Poland. But also in Switzerland, Holland, Hungary, Spain, Italy, France, Czech, Slovakia and Mexico “Cobra 11″ is broadcasted.

Cobra 11 the Stunts
The succes of “Alarm für Cobra 11″ is also to be thanked to the exciting action-scenes and the stunts which are filmed for such scenes. The realisation of the action-scenes cost per episode approx. 700.000 DM. From the beginning on the action-scenes are produced by the company “Action Concept”. This production company from Hürth is specialized in making action-scenes for tv and film. The stuntteam of Action Concept can be measured with the stuntteams which make the stunts for the Hollywood actionfilms. Action Concept takes care for the whole realisation of the action-scene: the preparation, the performing of the stunts, the filming of the scene and the editing of the recorded images. So at the end Action Concept delivers a complete action-scene.
This meant for Cobra 11 that during the first two seasons production company “Polyphon” produced the non-action-scenes (dramascenes). Action Concept produced the action-scenes and delivered these to Polyphon. The last company put all the scenes togehter and created the episode. Nowadays all the scenes (action and drama) are produced by Action Concept. Because Action Concept produces the whole action-scene, the action-scenes from “Cobra 11″ become very exciting and are filmed in a spectacular way. A few examples of stunts from Cobra 11: a truck crashes in a standing queue, a car turns 5.5 times upside down and a Porsche 928 flies with 200 km/h over a viaduct.
Before a stunt is filmed there are many things to do. First they have to decide how the stunts in the scene are peformed. Also a storyboard is made, in which the stuntscene is drawn as a sort of comic. Also important is to find a suited shooting-location. In the case of Cobra 11 German highways are often closed for the shootings. Most of the time this happens in the weekends, because then there isn’t much traffic that has to be derouted. Depending on the sort of stunt sometimes cars have to be preparated: they get for example a roll-bar or an automatic steering is installed if the car has to drive without a driver. When all this is taken care of, the film-crew goes to the shooting location.
When they have arrived there the requisites, like cameras and microphones, are unloaded. Next the shootings start. Usually the happenings which take place in the scene before stunt are filmed first. When it’s possible preparations for the stunt, like the placing of launching-ramps if cars have to go into the air, are made at the same time. Then it’s time to record the stunt. Of course first the cameras are placed. In some stunts 14 cameras are used. Some of them are placed in a so-called crash-box. This is a very strong box in which the camera is placed (in the right image you can see two of them). Now a truck could fall on this camera without the camera to be demolished. These cameras supply the spectacular images. When all preparations are taken there is a meeting, in which is told who has which task during the stunt. And then it gets dangerous: the stunt is peformed. After the most exciting moment of the day sometimes several shootings are made which conclude the action-scene.
When everything is recorded, the film goes into the studio. There the recordings are first digitalized: they are captured on a special hard-disk. With the help of a computer and some software the recordings, which are on the hard-disk, can be edited. This editing sometimes consists of removing the aids which are used in the stunt like the steel cable of the Ratchet-system (see “The making of”). Also the recordings are edited in the right order. The next step is to couple the edited recordings to the sound (image and sound are recorded seperately). Also sound-effects and background music are added. When all this is ready, the action-scene can be coupled to the other scenes in the episode.

Alarm for Cobra 11 Crash Time
Alarm for Cobra 11 Crash Time
Alarm for Cobra 11 is a very popular German Television series, and we have “hands on” on the game!
Check out our exclusive 3D shots and a very interesting Q&A with Andreas Leicht, product manager at Synetic!
Q: Hi Andreas, could you describe your position at Synetic and your development carreer?
A: It is my job to keep in touch with the outside world. Whether it is the exchange of information with other developers, answering typical questions from gamers about already released Synetic titles, or enquiries about current projects: communication is my thing! But as we are a small team also other aspects of development affect my daily business like QA, Product Management, Producing. I have started my career as a tester for a soccer management game during my study and become the director of QA after finishing study. With some other people from this company we founded our own company, Synetic and we are still all here to do some more racing games.
Q: We know Synetic from World Racing, a great sim racing done with Mercedes license. How did you get into the idea of a movie license?
Andreas Leicht
A: That is simple: We just gota phone call by RTL, the publisher of Alarm for Cobra 11, asking us to do a racing game with this license. We did have time and after having beensuccessful with “Alarm for Cobra 11 – Nitro” we are doing it a second time with “Crash Time”.
Q: Did you haveadvices or inputs for the gameplay by the screen writers of the Cobra 11 tv series?
A: We have had a “look behind the scenes” and it was great to see how many things are equalin making TV series and making games. We talked a lot with the guys from Action Concept about stunts, camera positions, computer animated effects and story telling. And even Hermann Joha, producer of the TV format Alarm for Cobra 11, is giving his voice for some mission briefings in the game. A big thanks from here J.
Q: You have built a quite big sim racing community with World Racing and World Racing 2. The modding scene was even interesting. Do you think those people will move to Cobra 11 Crash Time? Will be CT moddable?
A: The community and the ability to mod a game is very important for us. For people moving to Crash Time we can say that it is moddable in the same way and with the same tools they use for World Racing series or Cobra 11 – Nitro.
Q: How many people are employed at Synetic?
A: We are 10 people working here plus external teams for some outsource productions.
Q: About the engine, is it an evolution of the old one, or is it done from scratch?
A: It is an evolution of the engine we used for World Racing series, but we improved or redesigned many parts of the engine, like we have to do it for all of our productions.
Q: We think, that you have spent many time on creating the damage model of the game. Is this right?Could you describe us how it works?
A: Uhm, I will try to make it simple. The damage model works on a vertex basis. On the basis of physical impulses during a collision vertex basis is deformed. In addition, the animated model, clattering and sloping pieces, is triggered if the deformation exceeds a specified limit. This means that the cars are not only deforming but even parts can break and fall off. Last but not least we use a special texture to show scratches on the car where it was hit.
Q: The 3D landscape engine handles a huge polycount scene. Could you tell us how many polygons the landscape scenarios have, and how this part of the engine works?
A: Polycount is around 1.200.000 triangles per scene. To be honest I have no idea how the engine works. I just asked our 3D-programmers, but they kicked me out after the 3rd try to explain it with the sentence: “The triangles are there and then they will be drawn”.
Q: Are you using middleware to control physics?
A: No, the complete physic system is self-developed and enhanced with the 3D-engine.
Q: We were impressed about the A.I. inside the game. Are you using third parties solutions for A.I.?
A: The A.I. was nearly completely redesigned and we added a “Pathfinding”, which means that the A.I. is not track based and not limited to the streets. During an observation or police chase, the A.I. will find different ways to escape and if you have to repeat a mission, be sure that the A.I. will not choose the same way.
Q: The cities inside the game are real cities like Monaco. How many references did you took to get the textures of a city like Monaco?Did you had a collaboration with the authorities of the city? Did you need authorisations to reproduce it?
A: The cities in the game do refer to real architecture like industrial buildings, inner city districts, train stations and so on but we did not actually reproduce a complete real city.Several thousands of photos, texture DVD’s, research in books and videos was needed to get a real look of the cities and we are still collecting relevant data for our future productions. There is no need for any authorization on the textures we use, as if we are reworking the pictures and modify critical aspects like removing people in windows at a house front or advertisings.
Q: Which was the most difficult task in the development of Cobra 11 Crash Time?
A: No question, it was the new pathfinding system. After a quick success at the beginning of the development phase we underestimated the rest of this process totally. But at the end and with a lot of overhours it rocks J.
Q: Could you tell us the development time of Cobra 11 CT?
A: Too long. We worked over 8 month on it.
